Mary Schmid Daugherty

Mary Schmid Daugherty CFA, PhD, is a Finance Professor at the University of St. Thomas , Minneapolis , Minnesota . She is actively involved in teaching, research and consulting. Mary teaches Corporate Finance and Investment related topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She teaches in the Executive MBA program on financial topics of interest to privately held businesses. She also directs the Aristotle Fund, a student managed portfolio that actively invests approximately $3 million of the University of St. Thomas endowment.

Mary has conducted significant research both in investment management and family business. Her most recent research for family business centers on pricing differences between family controlled businesses and non-family controlled businesses at the time of the initial public offering. Her recent paper, “IPO Pricing in the Context of Family Controlled Businesses” was presented in November 2005 at the Southern Finance Association Annual Meeting. She is currently working on a related paper that evaluates the performance of publicly held companies that remain family controlled after the initial public offering.

Mary has an active consulting business focused on privately held businesses and their specific financial and investment related matters. She does a significant amount of work with family business owners and their unique financial education needs. Mary has held a variety of leadership positions in the Association for Investment Management and Research, served as President of the Twin Cities Society of Security Analysts, serves on the Board of two privately held businesses and a number of non-profit boards, and is a frequent speaker on a variety of Investment Management topics. In addition, Mary is a third generation family business owner and is the President of the Family Council.
