This year's event took place Monday, May 14, 5:30 p.m., at the Marriott Hotel in South Portland.

And the 2012 MFBA Winners are:

First Generation Award.

Pam Hurley Moser, Hurley Travel Experts, First Generation Award

Hurley Travel Experts, Portland, “We were blown away by initiatives and innovation; company rebounded, despite massive disruptions; just tremendous management.” Owner Pam Hurley Moser, upon accepting the award, introduced Denise Meiler, a 20-year employee who was first on the payroll in a week when “We didn’t know if we’d make payroll.”

Customer Service Award.

Rick St. Hilaire, Industrial Roofing Companies, Customer Service Award

Industrial Roofing Companies, Lewiston, “Rather than sell products for quick profits, they ‘repaired and cared for what exists’; they believed ‘success is measured by the satisfaction of our customers’. ‘’ IRC’s Rick St. Hilaire pointed to their need to bring in non-family, which they credit as key to their success.

Shep Lee Award for community service.

Dean Bingham, Dean's Sweets, Shep Lee Award

Dean’s Sweets, Portland, “Husband and wife defined and fulfilled their roles while donating to, and participating in, community causes on a grand scale; also a strong business model.” Co-owner Dean Bingham said “Our business model is giving it away; it’s our marketing plan.”

Maddy Corson Award/small business.

Scott Brown, SL Wadsworth, Maddy Corson Award

S.L. Wadsworth & Son, Eastport, “Loved the way they reinvented themselves; rather than restructure the company, this 195-year-old icon adjusted its business model to the community; amazing benefits all around.” Scott Brown, co-owner, dedicated the award to his mother, who is credited with turning the business into such a success, saying, “Happy Mother’s day, and although a day late, this is more than anything I could ever give.”

Leon Gorman Award/large business.

Bill Sowles, Morong Falmouth, Leon Gorman Award

Morong Falmouth, “Succession planning stood out as did a rare ability to communicate with customers, employees, family; they perpetuate a 60-year tradition by donating hours and money to many causes.” Bill Sowles, president, praised not only his family’s efforts at the automobile dealership, but also the loyalty of its employees.

Honorable Mention/small business.

Cole Jewelers, Portland, “Their different approach focused on treating customers as family; bypassed traditional markups in favor of custom-made pieces that involve artists nationwide.” Dean Cole, co-owner, said he believes working successfully with seven family members is why the company has prospered.
